(Emergency)sail from a dinghy

Mr. J.J. Haverhoek lived in Sint-Laurens with his parents when he was a 16-year old boy. Initially he was evacuated to Middelburg. He was evacated to Kapelle (Zuid-Beveland) later.

This small sail, which belongs to a dinghy, was handed to him by a British Royal Marines Commando, because he was very interested in everything related to the war. The father of mr. J.J. Haverhoek was employed in the police force during the war. By way of thanking for his support to the Allies he received this (emergency)sail for his son.

Dinghy = A small rubber launch for surviving whenever the pilot ends up in the sea. With this sail, which was attached to the dinghy together with the aluminium mast and stays, he could try to sail in whichever direction he wanted. (For example to liberated areas or the coast).
